A float tank, also known as a sensory deprivation tank, is a tank filled with approximately 800 lbs of Epsom salt and water heated to the outer skin temperature.
The high salt concentration of the tank makes it easy for you to float on your back with the back of your head partially underwater (just above your ears). Tanks tend to be large so you can stretch fully without touching its roof, floor, or walls.
The float tank is also soundproof and dark. This gives you a sensory deprivation experience that will encourage you to go into a quiet, meditative state while floating. The salts in the solution will also help you with stress relief and dull your pains and aches.
Sensory Deprivation tanks are starting to be used with Veterans and First Responders because its ability to help the nervous system decompress and recover. Allowing the nervous system to remove external stimulus and muscle movement helps the body rejuvenate, at the same time as assisting every organ system in the body.
The main benefit of using a sensory deprivation tank is to ease mental anxiety and muscle tension. Due to how buoyant the Epsom salt and water solution is, you can fully relax all of your muscles when floating. The water concentration allows 90% of neuromuscular function to stop, giving your nervous system time to rest and heal.
Studies are showing that float therapy is beneficial by improving relaxation, decrease muscle tension, helps reduce anxiety, improved sleep, improved immunity, improved blood pressure, to name a few.
Floating in a tank can also relieve migraines, it can help with chronic pain conditions like fibromyalgia and provide stress relief and detoxification since Epsom salts are high in magnesium, which can remove harmful substances such as free radicals from your body.
Free radicals are small particles that can damage your cells and increase inflammation, resulting in the development of conditions such as cancer and autoimmune disorders.
Magnesium can also promote bone and heart health, and even improve insulin sensitivity, which can help prevent diabetes.
The most common length of a float is 60 minutes. But more frequent floaters will do 90-120 minute float sessions.
60 Minutes is the minimum recommended duration so the nervous system and body has the time to relax and get the most benefits from a float. But here we offer 30, 45, 60 and 90 minute sessions.
If you enjoy floating and would like to float lots then you absolutely can. It is recommended 1 time a month but you can float once a week if you would like. Personally, we float once a week and the calmness of the nervous system and improved sleep is worth it!
Our DreamPod Float tank uses UV Light and filters to clean the water. It is put through a full cleaning cycle after every client finishes.
In reality, flotation tanks are very clean. High salt concentrations like what is used in float tanks create an unfavourable environment for any microorganisms.
To minimize the risk of infection, you should wear earplugs (provided during first float) and shower before and after the floating session.
You float on your back face up so your eyes, nose, and mouth will not come in direct contact with the salt solution.
Your float appointment begins when you arrive, I will show you the room and bathroom and explain the process. You will have a quick shower to wash off any lotions or makeup, then proceed into the float room. You undress to your comfort level, commonly done without any clothing, put in your earplugs and climb into the pod closing the door behind you. The internal lights will remain on until you are comfortable and turn them off. Now is when it starts, you lay in a comfortable face up position and allow your mind to escape and let your body relax. When your session is over, music will begin to play gently in the pod signalling you to slowly increase consciousness and climb out when ready. You dry yourself off and then proceed to the shower. All supplies are provided for you and your belongings are safely stowed in a basket provided to you. You will be given post float advice, drinking water and rest.
There are not many reason that you cannot float but if you have any allergies to magnesium or sulfate then it is not recommended as the water is concentrated with both. If you have had your hair coloured or dyed in the last 2 weeks you cannot float, it will bleed into the water resulting in a full replacement and costly to the floater.
Certain medical conditions may require a doctors note approving float therapy to ensure it is safe for you.
